Sir Thomas Bavin - circular, 15 Feb. 1929, to the electors of Parramatta
MLMSS 6883
NEW SOUTH WALES
PREMIER'S DEPARTMENT
SYDNEY, 15th February, 1929.
In reply quote No
To the Electors of Parramatta:
On Saturday next you
have a grave responsibility in choosing a successor to the late Mr.
Bruntnell, and I appeal to you to support General Lloyd, who will stand
for the principles that Mr. Bruntnell stood for and uphold the traditions
that he upheld. I appeal on his behalf on personal grounds; his military
record is one of which anyone might justifiably be proud, and the
qualities which gave him military distinction have also earned for him a
high position in commercial life. These qualities are badly wanted in the
public life of the State.
I appeal also for support
upon public grounds. The issue is not whether you are completely
satisfied with what the Government has done, but whether you wish to
revert to the methods adopted by Mr. Lang during his reckless regime as
Premier of this State.
Mr. Lang is endeavouring,
as he did during the Federal Elections, to divert attention from his own
deplorable record by wholly false and unauthorised statements as to the
Government's intention regarding Family Endowment and the Basic Wage.
This Government is just as anxious and just as determined as Mr. Lang to
maintain the standards of living of the workers of this State, and to
lighten the burdens of those who are in poverty or misfortune. The
difference is that we are determined to give substance instead of shadow
- things instead of words. Nothing more cruel can be conceived than the
effort that is now being made for the purposes of the Election, to
deceive those who are in want, by promises which Mr. Lang knows cannot be
fulfilled.
A vote for General Lloyd
is a vote for honesty and efficiency and for real effort to raise the
standard of living and of public life in the state of New South
Wales.
T.R. Bavin
