George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King Defender of the Faith &c &c To Our Trusty and Welbeloved Lieutenant Colonel William Paterson Greeting : We reposing especial Trust and Confidence in Your Loyalty, Courage and Experience in Military Affairs do by these Presents constitute and appoint You to be Lieutenant Governor of the Settlement within Our Territory called New South Wales in the Room of Colonel Francis Grose; You are therefore as Lieutenant Governor to take the said Settlement into Your care and charge, and carefully & diligently to discharge the Duty of Lieutenant Governor thereof, by doing and performing all and all manner of things thereunto belonging; And We do hereby strictly charge & require all Our Officers and Soldiers who shall be in Our said Territory, and all others whom it may concern, to obey you as Our Lieutenant Governor thereof; And you are to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions from time to time as You shall receive from Us, Our Governor of Our said Territory for the time being, or any other your Superior Officer according to the Rules and Discipline of War in pursuance of their Trust & We hereby repose in you, Given at Our Court at Saint James’s the Ninth day of June 1801. Commission of appointment to administer the settlement of Port Dalrymple, 1 Oct. 1804 (MLMSS 7421/2X)

To -

Lieut: Colonel William Paterson of the New South Wales Corps, Lieut: Governor of His Majesty’s Territory of New South Wales; hereby appointed to Administer the Government of the intended Settlement on the North part of Van Diemans Land called Port Dalrymple in the County of Cornwall, The Parallel of the 42nd degree of South Latitude being the line of demarcation between the Counties of Buckinghamshire and Cornwall on the aforesaid Island of Van Dieman being a Dependency on His Majesty’s Territory of New South Wales

Whereas, a Despatch dated 24th June 1803 was received by me on the 15th last May from the Right Honorable Lord Hobart one of His Majesty’s Principal Secretaries of State, Communicating “His Majesty’s Pleasure that Lieut: Col: Paterson should proceed to Port Dalrymple for the purpose of Administering the Government of that New Settlement and of remaining in that Charge until His Majesty’s Pleasure shall be made known”.

You are therefore hereby required and directed to take upon you the Administration of the Government of the said Settlement And I do hereby Charge and Command all His Majesty’s Forces that may be within your Command to Obey your Directions, And you to Obey all such Orders and Directions as you may from time to time receive from me or any other your Superior Officer according to the Rules and Discipline of War. For which this shall be your Authority until His Majesty’s further Pleasure is received thereon.
