Anna Josepha King (1765-1844) married Philip Gidley King in 1791 and went with him to Norfolk Island, returning to England in 1796. In 1799 King was appointed lieutenant-governor of New South Wales and they sailed to Sydney with their youngest child Elizabeth on the 'Speedy', captained by George Quested.
Anna King describes the voyage, commenting on the weather and events on the ship, including her husband's health and the behaviour of the women convicts. She also describes a social engagement with the English and Dutch settlers at the Cape of Good Hope. The cover leaf is inscribed, in another hand, 'Mrs. King's journal of her voyage to New South Wales which commenced the 20th of November 1799'.
