Administrative / Biographical Note
George French Angas (1822-1886) painter, lithographer and naturalist, was the eldest son of George Fife Angas. During his well-travelled life he published many illustrated works including, `South Australia, Illustrated' (1846) and `Savage Life and Scenes in Australia and New Zealand' (1847), `Kafirs illustrated' (1849). Angas arrived in Adelaide from England in 1844, later moving to Sydney where held a position at the Australian Museum from 1853. He returned to England in 1863 where he continued to contribute to the science of conchology.
Three of the letters are addressed to his publisher `J. Hogarth'. The first, dated 31 Jan. 1848 requests the release of two drawings for Mr Giles, along with the an advance in payment. The second letter, dated 28 July 1849 most likely written to his publisher relates to problems experienced with the delivery department by overseas subscribers to `Kafir illustrated'. The final letter (undated) requests his publisher to forward a missing plate from his sister's copy of `Kafirs' to his bookbinder, a Mr Proudfoot in George Street. The fourth, dated 10 Feb. 1875 is addressed to Stephen WIlliam Silver, the London shipping merchant and bibliophile. It discusses various business matters relating to the Zoological Society and the Royal Geographical Society, and requests Silver to forward any books on colonial subjects for review.
