Administrative / Biographical Note
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?), naturalist and explorer was born in Prussia and arrived in Sydney in 1842. In 1844 he led an expedition to Port Essington, departing from the Darling Downs in October and reaching his destination in December 1845, after covering almost 4800 kilometres. In 1848 he led another expedition with the aim of crossing the continent from east to west. After heading inland from the Darling Downs the expedition disappeared without trace. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol.2, 1788-1850. Before Ludwig Leichhardt started on his first expedition in 1843 he deposited many of his books with the Australian Museum. He also donated natural history specimens to the Museum in 1846 and 1847. Before leaving on his last expedition Leichhardt left his property in the care of James Murphy (father of John Murphy who was a member of the Port Essington expedition). James Murphy offered these items to the Australian Museum in 1853. The Museum transferred most of Leichhardt’s books and manuscripts to the Public Library of New South Wales in 1902. In 1917 three volumes and some letters (SAFE / C 150, SAFE / C 156, SAFE / C 158, part of A 1383/1) were transferred by the Museum to the Mitchell Library. The Public Library then transferred the Leichhardt papers in its custody to the Mitchell Library. In 1937 the Public Library transferred to the Mitchell Library a further two volumes (SAFE / B 818-SAFE / B 819) which had been received from the Museum in 1902. Further information can be found in the volume titled ‘Papers relating to the Leichhardt Collection of books at one time in the Museum, and now in the Public Library of New South Wales’, located at A 3938, and in Mitchell Library correspondence file ML 5/2002. Four volumes (SAFE / C 154-SAFE / C 155, SAFE / C 162-SAFE / C 163) were bequeathed by David Scott Mitchell in 1907. Further material was acquired from several sources. The source of acquisition of individual items is noted on the relevant series record.
